Residential duplex built in the 1890s. The lot size is 63’ x 120’. The vernacular Queen Anne structure displays a variety of interesting characteristics. The first floor is brick exterior and the second floor is framed with fish-scaled, tin-clad siding; and the third floor is decorative cut, shake shingles with a large plaster frieze in the center of huge gambrel roof. Fortunately. the second and third floor exterior is covered with asphalt brick-like siding that has protected it from time and the elements. In a 1978/79 Dubuque Architectural Survey this building was rated a “2” in architectural significance.
This property is a real fixer-upper and needs plenty of TLC. Structure has great bones and is handymans dream accomplishment when finished.
Other interesting details of this building’s architecture includes the turret domes, the upper floor windows seen through arches that recede into pockets into the ceilings. Large stained glass windows on the first floor, 20/2 color, glass windows on the third floor, interesting brick, corner treatments, and two, tin, tent roof porches complimenting the main porch with eastlake detailing.
Each side is 2500+ sq. foot with nine rooms and 2 full baths plus a bonus third floor. Each side of the building has two ornate fireplaces (original) and the first floor has original woodwork with blocking of a man’s face simulating the North wind.
History documents its share of interesting characters who have resided in this building. Dr. Isaac Bigelow occupied the 346 side for many years. He was prominent in medical circles and has contributed to various medical journals. His most notable paper was “Fractures of the Elbow Joint.” He was examiner for the State Pensions Board and a member of the State Insanity Commission. Documents conclude Mrs. Carrie Barker lived in 346 in 1929. Mrs. Barker was the only known Dubuque descendent of George Washington.
